I got the welder working on an ice breaker attachment for the bow of the crestliner. I know around Mankato we still have 18+ on several of the lakes and there are lots of guys still ice fishing. I've been going to the Flowage for opener since '84 and there's never been any ice but this is starting to make me nervous, It's less than a month away!

There is still a lot of ice out there but it will go fast on the Chip. I wouldn't be surprised to see ice on some of the natural lakes for the opener. It's happened before but I don't think the Chip has ever been iced for the opener. Most of the creek channels are starting to go so the rest of the Chip will go fast now. Don't plan on much melting in the next two days though. BRRRRRRRRR!

This is how the ice out went here in Northern Illinois on Shabbona lake this year. Just thought y'all might see how fast it can go.

March 16th.... 12" ice. Guys ice fishing catching crappie.

March 21st....95% of lake still iced up, but not safe ice. Ice pulling away from shore.

March 25th...40% of lake OPEN WATER. Bays open, and original creek channel open. Geese and gulls present.

March 27...100% OPEN WATER Boats out.

We did not have a 60 degree day during that stetch. Lots of 50's, a few nights when it did not freeze, a few days of nice sun, and some wind and rain.

That is kind of a casual observation of how it went here, by no mean scientific yet relatively accurate. So, my Northern friends...hold hope. I hope warm weather gets there fast and all the ice goes away, and y'all can do what you enjoy doing so much !

What sucks is...it might snow here this weekend. Uffda. I think I'll go to Kansas.

Illinois season doesn't close. There are a few lakes that have muskies and can be fished now.

Chris, Yeah, like ColdFront said, open season all year. Last weekend a guy got a 42" on a Rattle trap.

Shabbona is 318 acres. 10 HorsePower motor limit. Park hours are 8 AM to 8 PM this month.

The ice is going our slowly and is out on some of the smaller shallow lakes with current. Part of Rice Lake is out, Cranberry Flowage in Cameron is out, Upper Long is out but many are still questionable for this weekend.

There are some great pics of the ice (or rapidly disappearing ice) on www.lrgraf.com

It's pretty exciting to see actual pics of the lake opening up, especially for someone stuck inside at work all day. Less than 1 week, but the real fishing doesn't start for a few more weeks.
