"EARLY SEASON TIPS-BASS"

LAST EDITED ON 04-09-08 AT 05:33 PM (CST) by Steve Herbeck (moderator)

IF WATER TEMPS ARE NOT OR UNTILL THEY REACH MID 50 OR SO AND WARMING THE BEST PLACES TO SEARCH OUT BASS OTHER THAN THE VERY OCCASIONAL ROAMER IN SHALLOW IS RIGHT WHERE YOU FOUND THEM LAST FALL. OFF MID LAKE AND SHORELINE CONNECTED BARS,POINTS,AND DROPS USUALLY AT 16-24' BUT EVEN DEEPER AND WHEN YOU FIND THEM THEY WILL BE IN BUNCHES.
JIGS,LINDY RIGS WITH BIG DACE AND SUCKERS,TUBE JIGS,BLADE BAITS WILL PUT FISH IN THE BOAT.
ONCE WATER TEMPS START WARMING UP THE SHALLOWS AND SPAWNING AREAS WHICH IS TYPICALLY THE LAST WEEK OF MAY FIRST COUPLE WEEKS OF JUNE INTO THE OPTIMUM TEMP RANGES AGAIN DEPENDING ON THE SPRING AND WEATHER BASS WILL MAKE THIER MOVE INTO THESE AREAS VERY QUICKLY IN JUST A MATTER OF A FEW DAYS.YOU CAN GO FROM SEEING/CATCHING VERY FEW TO BONANZA IN JUST A MATTER OF A FEW DAYS.
ALOT OF COLD WEATHER AND OR FRONTS WILL DELAY OR SET BACK THE ACTION UNTILL STABLE WARMING WEATHER BRINGS WATER TEMPS BACK UP.IF THIS HAPPENS TRY DROPPING OUT A LITTLE LOOKING FOR SLIGHTLY DEEPER OR HOLES IN THE BAYS AND OR NEARBY COVER.

YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT THE VERY BEST BASS FISHING FOR SHALLOW TOPWATER,PLASTICS,TWITCHBAITS,SPINNERBAITS ETC CASTING BASS IS DURING THIS LATE MAY EARLY-MID JUNE TIME FRAME.

LOOK IN THE BACKS AND SIDES OF BAYS,LITTLE ISLAND AND ROCK CLUSTERS IN BAYS ESPECIALLY THOSE SHELTERED CONSISTANTLY FROM THE PREDOMINANTLY COLDER NE,NW,N WINDS WITH COMBO MUD/SAND,AND A FEW BOULDER BOTTOMS AND LOGS,ALOT OF THESE AREAS WILL HAVE DEAD BROWN WEEDS AND NEWLY EMERGING SHOOTS OF GREEN REEDS.
ONCE YOU HAVE FOUND SPAWNING AREAS THEY WILL USE THEM EVERY YEAR,EVEN SOME OF THE SAME BEDS THEY WILL RECLEAN AND USE. AT THE BEGINNING LOOK FOR DARKER SPOTS THESE WILL BE OLD BEDS GROWN OVER AND AS IT MOVES ALONG THEY WILL STAND OUT LIGHT COLORED AS THEY ARE SWEPT.
TUBES,FLUKES,SIEKOS,SPINNERBAITS,POPRS,WEEDLESS JIG HEAD AND A TWISTER,IT ALL DEPENDS ON THIER ACTIVITY LEVELS. IF IT'S TOUGH A DROP SHOT RIG AND A MUD MINNOW,FATHEAD OR LEECH IS A SURE FIRE REMEDY.
SMALLMOUTH BASS ARE A TREMENDOUS RENEWABLE RESOURCE,HECK YOU CAN CATCH THE SANE 3-5#ER 3-4 TIMES A DAY SOMETIMES AND ARE SHOWING A FANTASTIC RESURGENCE SINCE ADOPTION OF THE BASICALLY C/R SEASON TILL END OF JUNE. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO 2 KEEP 2 SMALL BASS UNDER 13.75" UNTILL THEN THOUGH THESE MALES ARE AS IMPORTANT TO RELEASE AND THE FUTURE FISHERY AS ARE THE SPAWNING FEMALES.THEY ARE THER PROTECTORS SO GET THEM RIGHT BACK IN THE WATER SO THEY CAN PROTECT THIER NESTS.
AS SPAWNING IS COMPLETED THE MALES WILL STAY AND GUARD AND THE FEMALES WILL MOVE OUT INTO THE REEDS,WEEDS AND PROGRESSIVLY MOVE OUT ALONG THE SIDES OF THE BAYS UTILIZING NEWLY EMERGING COVER,DOWNED TREES,ROCK CLUSTERS AND POCKETS OF NEW GREEN REED SHOOTS EVENTUALLY MOVING TO THE BAYS POINTS AND ROCKY SHORELINES ,ISLAND CLUSTERS AND MIDLAKE BARS EVEN SUSPENDING BIG TIME IN SOME SYSTEMS BECSUSE OF THE FORAGE BASE.
AS FAR AS THE FEMALES DID YOU REALIZE THAT AN 18-19" TROPHY BASS IS IN THE VACINITY OF 16-20 YRS OLD? VERY FEW KEEP BASS ANYMORE BUT CONSIDER THIS IF YOU ARE CONTEMPLATING IT AND HOW LONG IT TAKES TO GROW ONE TO THAT SIZE FOR YOUR KIDS TO CATCH.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SHALLOW FISHING FOR WALLEYES,PIKE,AND LAKERS STILL SHALLOW WITH SOME OF THE BEST BASS FISHING OF THE SEASON CONSIDER A LATE MAY EARLY/MID JUNE TRIP. FEW BUGS YET,FAMILYS FOR THE MOST PART HAVEN'T ARRIVED YET SO IT'S A FISHING CAMP ATMOSPHERE,AND GREAT FISHING.

TAKE CARE AND GOOD FISH'N!!!
